Cute, Sweet, and Adorable All Round!

Audrey (she prefers Odd) lives in a perpetual state of boredom. She tries to keep busy with small jobs around town and by listening to stories of adventure from a boy in the travelling circus—her only friend Kite. But Odd has always had one thought in her head: I want to go on my own adventure.

It appears that Odd’s wish finally comes true as a flying island appears over the town and whisks Audrey and Kite away to a far-off place, into a forest of the magical Nightlands where mystic creatures and magical folk roam. It’s up to Audrey and Kite to learn how to master the strange workings of this new world in order to find their way home. (Goodreads)

Audrey is a little different.

Some might say Odd. Hence, the nickname. She dreams of adventure away from her poor little town, and she drags her best friend, Kite, into her imagination. One day as they are going about their normal routine, they feel a huge wind and a giant shadow falls over the entire town. In the sky is a floating cloud of dirt! Of course, Odd sees this as her chance, and finds the highest point in the entire town, so that she can jump onto the floating island and make the (*ahem* literal) leap to an adventure!

This story was quite cute.

It was most definitely middle grade, as it was told in a very young and simplistic voice, and the little details weren’t stressed as much. Nonetheless, I enjoyed the writing style, and it carried me through the book quite quickly.

The characters were sweet, although a little unbelievable.

I liked Odd’s big dreams and Kite’s struggle to keep up with her, but I didn’t find that it was very realistic. Odd’s mother just let the two of them roam around freely all day, getting up to all kinds of trouble, and I don’t think they went to school either. However, as it is fantasy, I’m willing to let that slide.

It really was only part one.

The cover has the book labeled as An Odd Adventure Part One: Crash Landers. At just over 100 pages, the book was extremely short, even for middle grade. It didn’t really have a clear ending, and I got much more of a “to be continued” feeling than anything. This is okay, but I felt it was somewhat unnecessary, and it probably would’ve been better published along with the next book as one.

Overall, it was short and quick, but still sweet and enjoyable.

It was just very cute! I don’t know how else to describe it. If you like Middle Grade Fantasy and you’re okay with a To Be Continued type of ending, I say go for it!

Aaaaaaaand I know I did this yesterday but…

I’ve decided to join yet ANOTHER readathon. I know, I know, I’m insane. I posted my TBR for the Biannual Bibliothon yesterday, and my announcement for the Bout of Books readathon a little while ago. Bout of Books runs from the 2nd to the 8th, and the Biannual Bibliothon goes from the 8th to the 14th. Now in the middle I’m adding the Read-The-Book-a-Thon, which goes from the 4th to the 10th. Therefore, a couple of books on my #ReadTheBookAThon TBR overlap with my Bibib TBR. I know, it’s all very confusing. XD On the plus side, I’m doing well with Bout of Books so far! I was able to finish Hidden Deep yesterday, and I just finished If I Was Your Girl by Meredith Russo a little while ago. (It was amazing!)
