Maybe I’m crazy, but I read a bunch of comics and short stories this month, so I figured it was a lot for one wrap-up. Therefore, this is a separate wrap-up for the comics/classics/short stories that I read this month; I hope you enjoy it in any case! Let’s get right into it.
Ms. Marvel Vol. 7- I’m loving this comic. It’s such a unique storyline and it really reminds me of the current Spiderman (movie) story. It’s definitely my favorite of all of the comics I’ve tried thus far. If you haven’t tried this comic yet, you should definitely give it a shot! ★★★★
Giant Days Vol. 1-2- This comic has a quite interesting concept. I love the art style and characters, and I’m rather curious about the storyline. However, it’s not my favorite ever, and I’m not sure how I feel about the series yet. I like it enough that I’m trying the next couple volumes, though. ★★★
Princess Princess Ever After- This is actually a web comic (which I discovered thanks to Eve @ Twist in the Taile) which is complete and ADORABLE. Rapunzel kind of gets saved… by a princess. It’s awesome. You can read it here, and as it’s super short, you should definitely check this one out if you haven’t already! ★★★★
Paper Girls Vol. 3- I’m loving this comic series. I have ZERO idea what’s going on. It’s totally fabulous. ★★★★
The Beauty Vol. 1- This comic is about a world where a sexual disease can give you beauty. Of course, this disease becomes a “hot new thing” that people actually TRY to get. Until it starts killing people. Dun dun dunhhhhh! Unfortunately, I’m not sure about this one. It’s not my favorite so far. ★★★
Shoot Around- This is another complete web comic. I don’t even know what to say except READ IT. It’s fabulous, diverse, very gay (and trans and virtually every other sexuality), and there’s a zombie apocalypse. You can read it here, so definitely give it a shot if you haven’t already! ★★★★
Saga Vol. 6-7- I felt like the series was going downhill, but it seems like it’s picking up again. I’m excited to see where the story goes in the next volume! ★★★★
Monstress Vol. 1- I just wasn’t a fan of this one. I honestly want to hug the little fox child the WHOLE TIME. I don’t APPRECIATE everyone else yelling at her (him? I don’t actually know). DON’T TOUCH MY CUTE FOX CHILD. ★★
The Little Match Girl- I realized that a couple of Hans Christian Andersen’s stories were mentioned/heavily prevalent in another book I was reading so as I had already checked out the entire set of his work from the library, I ended up reading a couple of the stories. I quite enjoyed this one. ★★★★
The Steadfast Tin Soldier- This is another one of his stories. It’s heartbreaking… And beautiful. ★★★★
Kindred Spirits- I picked this one up… Simply because it’s by Rainbow Rowell. It’s about a Star Wars fangirl waiting in line for the new movie. I mean… I haven’t seen any of the Star Wars movies? Sorry? Anyhoo, I enjoyed it anyway. It was cute. ★★★★
Cinderella- The version I read contained both the original Cinderella as well as the Grimm brothers version. The original is extremely similar to the Disney version. The Grimm version was, well, gory, but also not very well done. I don’t mind some “grim”, but it’s unnecessary in this story and doesn’t add anything. The story doesn’t actually make sense. ★★★
The Little Mermaid- I read this for one of my final yearly challenges, and I really enjoyed it! I don’t know why, but I really wasn’t expecting to. I loved seeing all of the similarities and differences between the original and the Disney version as well. ★★★★
The Snow Queen- This is the final Hans Christian Andersen story that I read this month! I actually didn’t enjoy it as much even though I think it’s one of his more popular stories. Also- I thought that Frozen was supposed to be based off of this story? I honestly didn’t see any close similarities, so I’m not sure where that comes from. ★★★
The Silver Horse Switch- I found this book because I had ONE challenge left for the entire year… And the book I was reading would have taken me all night to finish. I chose to spend time with my family and read THIS. It was… cute? And strange? ★★★
Whew! And that’s my month in… shorts? I guess? 😉 I definitely hope you guys enjoyed this post. Let me know if you read comics (web or physical) and if you’ve read any of these other short stories. Do you read short stories and/or old classics? I’d love to hear your thoughts on any of these. Anyway… Happy New Year!
Ah great list, Amy! I personally only read The Little Match Girl from those you mentioned but I very much want to check the others out when I get the time/mood 🙂
I also found myself wanting to read a lot more comics the past few months, though I ended up reading mostly webtoons.

Thanks, I’m glad you enjoyed it! I thought The Little Match Girl was very unique.
Cool! Princess Princess and Shout Around are both webtoons; have you heard of/read them?

Ooh I love Ms. Marvel!! I don’t read a lot of comics because they’re too expensive for me to buy😂 but I used to read them when I had a good library!! I’d like to start again because they’re really fun and the art is often awesome. And I loooove the superhero ones. I think superheroes work better in action-drawing-comic-scenes than in just a book of prose.😂

Me too!! Haha exactly; I only ever pick up the ones available through my library. They’re so pricey!
That’s very true. Occasionally I’ll be reading a book and I’m like “this would be so much better as a comic”. 😂☺️

Ah, I must catch up with Saga! I don’t even know which volume I’m on anymore because I’ve been reading the single issues, but ah well, I’ll hopefully figure it out eventually. XD I read the first few issues of Paper Girls as well, and I love how strange it is! It has such a nice vibe, and I’m digging the artwork. Oh, it sucks that you didn’t like Monstress; I’ve heard such good things about it, and I’m hoping to get to it someday! 😀

Haha I totally understand the feeling! I felt like it was getting a little over-the-top for a bit there, but I’m enjoying where it’s at at this point. You might actually be ahead of the volumes, if you’re reading single issues!
I know right!! It’s so weird, but I’m eager to figure out what’s happening.
You might really like it; it just wasn’t my taste. I’m not a big fan of anything where people are yelling at little kids (AKA my favorite characters) for no reason, and I didn’t really understand what was going on, but it does have an intriguing concept.

Aah I’m so glad again that you enjoyed Princess Princess! I now need to try and persuade my library to get Saga vol 8 which I believe just came out, and I really want to try Paper Girls. (Although I am not very good when I find stuff super confusing, thus why I don’t enjoy some comics I’ve tried.) I’m still only at the beginning of Shoot Around but I REALLY want to continue with it since it was so great & right up my street!

Absolutely! It was so cute haha. 😉
Ooo, good luck! I didn’t realize it was out. Not my library, but another in the system gets virtually all of the new comics. It’s fabulous.
Yes, definitely give Paper Girls a shot! I don’t think you’ll regret it.
Omg, Shoot Around is amazing! It gets even better, don’t worry. And the ending is fabulous too. not just abrupt. XD

I am trying my best to make use of the free reservations from other libraries in my area whilst I am still young enough haha. I will definitely try those two!
