So many old ARCs… Oops?| Mini Reviews!

Hey guys! As you may know (if you’ve been reading my latest monthly TBRs), I have quite a few “backlist” ARCs that have been overdue for FAR too long. Thanks to the joy that is Netgalley (and Edelweiss). Therefore, I will preface this by saying that all of these books were kindly provided by the publishers in exchange for an honest, unbiased review. Anyhoo, let’s get into some reviews!

28818369The Graces by Laure Eve- This is one of the absolute VERY first books that I ever requested on Netgalley. I requested it so long ago that I didn’t even have the copy! Ack! Anyway. The beginning was kind of boring. I was reading it for the sake of reading it. And because the cover was pretty. But as the book progressed, it became more and more clear that River (the main character) is ABSOLUTELY INSANE. Her past begins to come into play, and the story gets DARK. Which is exactly where I like it. I read it on a stormy day. It was shockingly fabulous. And I am SO excited for the sequel. ★★★★

27782006Lucky Me by Saba Kapur- This book was definitely cute. I enjoyed it, yada yada yada. The premise was neat. I think I was even somewhat invested in the story. But honestly, it was quite unmemorable. It was a cutesy Hollywood “typical” YA contemporary romance, and it was fun for that, but I can hardly even recall what happened. Oops? It was cute. Let’s just leave it at that. ★★★

26802671Clancy of the Undertow by Christopher Currie- I don’t know why, but I really didn’t expect to enjoy this as much as I did. And as I recall, I enjoyed it quite a bit. It was a bit unexpected, although I totally knew what the thing with Sasha was going to be. Honestly, I was just super pleased with it. Not everything in life turns out perfect, and not everyone in life will be kind or reasonable, even your idols. It’s hard to realize that sometimes, but it happens to everyone. Clancy had a very unique and interesting writing style, which definitely added to the atmosphere. I might reread this at some point to see if my feelings have changed at all. ★★★★

30312686Spurt by Chris Miles- I don’t even know what to SAY about this. It was just. So. Cringe-worthy. Aghhhhh! The main character is a young teenage boy. Who has not yet encountered puberty yet. But is very much hoping to. It was told very much like middle grade, but it had more “mature” (or should I say immature) jokes. It was so uncomfortable and cringe-y and annoying. Eugh. ★★★

30269126Empress of a Thousand Skies by Rhoda Belleza- Honestly, this just felt like… Every other sci-fi I’ve read? It didn’t seem very special to me and I just couldn’t get into it. Rhiannon was a rather bland character, in my opinion. I was way more interested in Alyosha, but I still wasn’t super crazy about him. The plot was somewhat intriguing, but not enough that I was enthralled. I was curious about the ending, however. I may pick up the sequel to see if it picks up the pace; we shall see! ★★★.5

Wow, that was quick! I’ve had some of those on my “to-do” list for ages, so I’m super glad I’ve finally gotten them out there. Definitely let me know down in the comments if you’ve read/plan to read any of these books; I’d love to hear your opinions! And for all of my fellow book bloggers out there (or booktubers etc., I don’t discriminate!), do you have any old ARCs that you still need to get to? I have… TOO many. If so, which are they/how many? (Or is it too many to count?) Ah, the joys of Netgalley…. Sigh. Stay beautiful! 😉

With love,

               Amy Lou ❤

  1. I definitely have a couple books on Netgalley where I’ve written a small review in the hopes of writing a full one.. eek! There are a couple I have yet to review, but that’s because they release in February and I want to wait a little bit. 🙂 I think I have maybe two or three?? But it’s been worse! I love Netgalley, but sometimes it’s hard to control yourself! XD

    1. Hahaha then you get it! The struggle is REAL. 😉
That makes sense! You’re not behind at all, haha! I have around… 20 more I think? I believe it was ~30 before this post, and I have a couple more that I’ve read but haven’t reviewed yet. I’ve read them more recently, though, so I remember them a lot better.

  2. Omg you liked The Graces too!! I’M SO HAPPY!! I feel like when it came out most people hated it but I thought it was like so wildly dark?!😂 And I want to read Clancy sometime too nods Also TOTAL agreement that Empress of a Thousand Skies was a bit … samey? Actually my 6yo nephew saw me reading it and he’s like, “That book is silly. There is only one sky.” 😂😂

I have The Loose Ends List which I should’ve read um…2 years ago? Help.😂

    1. YES!! At first it was kind of a chore but I was pleasantly surprised by the absolute insanity. Mucho fabuloso.
      Ooo, hopefully you like Clancy!
Hahahahaha I love that! He’s totally right. Books with 2+ skies are the best.
Haha oops! I think I still have… Maybe 20 books on Netgalley that are overdue? I’m working on it, haha!

  3. Hey Amy! ❤ I’ve heard various things about Empress of a Thousand Skies and I think when it comes around I’m cutting it from my tbr because yeah I’m just not up for the typical right now… BUT congratulations on getting these ARCs done and done!! I have about 10 that have NO due dates (due dates are the best!) that I need to squeeze in there … which normally never happens because I squeeze in books I want to read instead, lol.

    1. Thanks for commenting! XD I totally get that. When the sequel comes out I might pick it up; if it’s a total wowzer then it might be worth it but I honestly doubt it.
Thanks so much!! I have about 3 more that I think I might make into another one of these, and I just finished one last night as well. I have about 25 that were due anywhere from late 2016 to early-mid 2017?? I don’t know what I was thinking. Eugh. I’m working on it though! It’s really helpful when I can pick up copies of some of the older ones from my library, haha.

  4. I have soooo many ARCs as well, it’s so embarrassing! Especially because some are authors’ requests eek :/
Anyway, I’m glad you managed to catch up with some of them, even if they weren’t all that great… I’m super curious about The Graces, it sounds amazing! I hope I can get to it sometime soon as well 🙂
As for The Empress of a Thousand Skies, if it’s way too generic and preditcable, then I might skip it. Or wait to see what the sequel has in store, too.
    Great post, Amy! 🙂

    1. Hahaha I totally know the feeling!
Thanks! I’ve had a few nice surprises, so hopefully there will continue to be more of those, haha! 😉
It was quite interesting! It’s very… unique. I don’t know how to describe it, but I hope you enjoy it if you pick it up!
As far as I know, it seems like a lot of other people agree with me, but maybe you won’t see it that way? I think I’m going to wait and see how other people start rating the sequel, but most likely I won’t pick it up. I’m just not that interested.

      1. Ah I see 🙂 I hope I find it just as awesome, then!
I’ll definitely wait for the sequel, as I already have so many I need to read before that, anyway… It irks me when there’s a long time between releases and I end up forgetting everything that happened in the first book xD Might as well just go for it when it’s completed 🙂

  5. The only one of these that I’ve read is Empress of a Thousand Skies and it was kind of disappointing for me too (Like, made my list of most disappointing 2017 reads). I felt like all the exciting stuff happened off the page. Like for instance the part where the one character dies (I can’t even remember his name, but I think he might be the only one who dies in the book??). It doesn’t even happen on the page. Something terrible is happening and then the POV switches and when we come back, he’s dead and we don’t even know what actually happened! I am salty still. I feel like I would have felt a lot more positive about this book if we got to see that part because it would have made me FEEL things! Ahh! I am still disappointed about not liking that one! Great reviews!

  6. Wow! I’m scared to ask for ARCs, because I don’t have enough experience as a blogger or reviewer to be approved. I also have trouble balancing life with my TBR lists so I won’t be able to read all these in time for reviews, hah. So cool 🙂

    1. Ah, don’t worry, I can’t get physical ARCs either! Netgalley is an awesome website for e-ARCs, and especially if you’re requesting some lesser known books, you’re likely to get approved for some.
Haha I’m very late with all of mine; I’m trying to catch up at this point! Thanks!

        1. Haha this is true; thanks! If you’re not having luck, I definitely definitely recommend getting a couple of the “read now” books and reviewing them so publishers can see that you’ll actually read their books instead of, I dunno, pirating them.
