Hey guys, it’s Amy! I feel like I’ve seen this topic discussed a lot lately in the blogosphere. It’s seen as kind of taboo, because of some idiots who messed up, but that should not reflect on the entire blogosphere. Most of us are the kindest, sweetest, most innocent people you’ll ever meet, and it’s not fair for other people, as well as some bloggers, to think that that will happen with everyone in every situation.
I wanted to talk about this post now, though, because of a particular post I stumbled upon- Ashley @ Nose Graze’s post on book bloggers making money. I liked reading the responses she got, but when I was finished, I replied with this comment:
This is a really interesting post. It’s actually rather disheartening to read the comments on this post, because I see that a few say they won’t read a blog that gets paid for any kind of reviews. But I’ve been thinking about this topic lately. I’m a teenager (AKA no bills, and any money I earn basically goes to books haha), so I don’t need the money. I don’t want it either. However, if I want to upgrade my blog and/or buy something that would help traffic, efficiency, etc., I think it would be awesome if I was able to make a little money blogging, and put that money BACK into my blog. Eventually, it would be amazing if I could make some real money from my blog, because I love doing it, and as it grows bigger, there are more and more things I have to do to keep it running and growing, and be social at the same time.
Recently, I was contacted about reviewing this ONE THING (which I shall review soon, so don’t worry, you’ll hear full details), and I freaked out because Kiersten White’s name was mentioned. Now, granted, I’ve never read And I Darken (and I don’t know whether she has any other books), but she’s a BIG author. I proceeded to fangirl wildly about it to all of my friends, and eventually, my parents. And they said something about me ending up having this as a job. And I just went… OHHHHHHHHHHH.
We all know that there are plenty of YouTubers out there who have sponsored posts. In fact, most of their posts are sponsored. Because YouTube is their JOB. So why can’t we do the same thing with book blogging? We’re putting in a ton of time (and occasionally money), not to mention thought and just general creativity. Now, I want to make sure you all know right now:
I do not currently make any profit off of my blog. No affiliate links, no sponsored posts, no paid reviews, nothing. I promise that I will let you know immediately if and when that happens. This is all HYPOTHETICAL, a discussion post, a little testing-the-waters if you will.
There are a gazillion other posts out there like this that explain the whole idea so much better, and go into much more detail. For today, I just wanted to throw the idea out there and see what you all thought! PLEASE let me know down in the comments what you think about this topic, and if you would be okay with it if I ever decided to participate in anything like this and try to make money off of my blog! I would really appreciate it. Thanks! Toodles! 😉
I totally wish it could be my job too. I enjoy it so much. But I’ll keep my day time job at the bank just in case. Lol it wouldn’t bother me if you did get paid or anyone for that matter. As long as the reviews were completely honest.

Absolutely! Hahaha I get that! I feel like you’d definitely have to work up to it being anything more than pocket change, but eventually it could be.
Thanks! I think I just couldn’t do paid reviews, because there’s no guarantee to readers that it’s truthful, so it would probably be mostly just affiliate links and potentially payment to move a review request to the top of the list.

I would have to agree with that. Unfortunately I seems that being paid to do reviews make people doing what you’re saying. And then you feel obligated to say good things because they are paying you. It’s a double edge sword for sure.

Yes, exactly. I think it’s a little too out there for me to try, at least at the moment.

I make zero $ off of my blog, but I sure wish I could! I’m 30 years old and I have a family. Our family is 5 people supported by 1 income due to my daughter’s disability (autism) so believe me if I could make this my job I sure would too! And I would read blogs that get paid to review so long as their reviews seem to be genuine and honest. I would never take money for a review if I couldn’t be honest and as far as I know that doesn’t happen anyway. But who knows lol. Terrific post and I’m sure lots of others out there feel the same!

That makes sense! Yes, I totally understand- I think it would just take time to work up to it being more than pocket change. It could probably be a part-time job, though!
Yes, paid reviews are kind of a gray area. I probably wouldn’t go there, and instead just stick with affiliate links and other things that couldn’t possibly influence my opinion.
Thanks so much! 🙂

I think if you can make money off your blog and still maintain your integrity (not accepting money to promote products you don’t believe in or are harmful or unethical in any way) then power to ya! The amount of time and effort that goes into writing and promoting a blog is no small thing so every little bit of support helps 💞

Thanks, I totally agree! Paid reviews are rather sketchy, but some promoted posts might be okay, and I don’t see anything wrong with affiliate links (especially for books I really love). I totally agree! 🙂

Great post!
It seems that we have created a weird standard for book bloggers. We put it tonnes of work, but the second we take something for it, we’re thrown under the bus. Even though, as you say, youtubers are able to do that without a second thought. Who decided these were the rules? I personally wouldn’t have issues with reading a paid review, as long as it was honest. Critics get paid, why are bloggers not allowed?
I’d love to make money for my blog. Even if it just paid for a proper domain and a few books and went back into it. Would be wonderful.

I know, don’t we though? It doesn’t make any sense. It’s almost discrimination.
I know what you mean, but I probably wouldn’t/won’t go the route of paid reviews, simply because I don’t think there would be demand. So many book bloggers do reviews for free, and paid reviews are still frowned upon by most people.
Absolutely, that’s exactly how I feel! 🙂

I personally believe that making money from a book blog is fine as long as you aren’t asking to be paid to to the reviews themselves. I think affiliate links, and providing advertising spaces for things like Google Adsense and paid promotional advertising spots (at a reasonable cost of course) for authors at a reasonable cost is OK, and this is what I do on my blog, just to pay for the cost of running the blog and keeping the domain name. It certainly hasn’t allowed me to give up working elsewhere though.

I totally agree! That makes perfect sense. Ah, well, it’s a bit of fun money, right? 🙂
