Hey guys, it’s Amy! A little while ago, I found this cool meme when I was visiting blogs (as I do, I’m not THAT antisocial *scoffs while sitting alone in corner*), and I thought it looked amazing! I’ve actually thought about doing a post like this before, so I was very intrigued when I found it as a monthly meme. Anyhoo, may I present:
When I First Saw You, or WIFSY for short, is a monthly meme here on Sailing Through Books that consists of sharing a first impressions of a book in the form of a synopsis, so basically judging a book by it’s cover yes.
Now, I know I’m a day late, but I hope it’s okay that I’m doing it today instead! I just didn’t have time to do it yesterday.
All of the covers this month were beautiful, but this is the one that spoke to me the most:
Ahem. Can you tell I’m nervous? I also just noticed it’s by A.G. Howard… *is stalling* OKAY OKAY HERE GOES.
Mariah was never one for chatty conversation. At least, not with people. As long as she can remember, she’s had a way with plants. She can no longer remember when she started speaking to them… Or when they started to talk back. All she knows is her plants, and the prey she ensnares in her thorns. Until a mysterious stranger turns up in one of her usual traps- only, he’s not so mysterious. Could he be someone from her past? What happened so long ago? Are her beautiful plants, her friends, poisoning her? As she starts to question who she is, and where she came from, Mariah wonders who she can really trust. And when he wakes up, will she have the heart to kill him, as she knows she must?
Hmmmm… That wasn’t so bad, I guess? Let’s look at the real synopsis (taken from Goodreads):
In this modern day spin on Leroux’s gothic tale of unrequited love turned to madness, seventeen-year-old Rune Germain has a mysterious affliction linked to her operatic talent, and a horrifying mistake she’s trying to hide. Hoping creative direction will help her, Rune’s mother sends her to a French arts conservatory for her senior year, located in an opera house rumored to have ties to The Phantom of the Opera.
At RoseBlood, Rune secretly befriends the masked Thorn—an elusive violinist who not only guides her musical transformation through dreams that seem more real than reality itself, but somehow knows who she is behind her own masks. As the two discover an otherworldly connection and a soul-deep romance blossoms, Thorn’s dark agenda comes to light and he’s forced to make a deadly choice: lead Rune to her destruction, or face the wrath of the phantom who has haunted the opera house for a century, and is the only father he’s ever known.
A. G. Howard brings the romantic storytelling that Splintered fans adore to France—and an entirely new world filled with lavish romance and intrigue—in a retelling inspired by a story that has captivated generations. Fans of both the Phantom of the Opera musical and novel, as well as YA retellings such as Marissa Meyer’s Cinder, will devour RoseBlood.
HAHAHAHAHAHA. Well then! That wasn’t even close! Roseblood does look interesting, though, so I’ll have to add that to my TBR! What did you guys think of my synopsis? Are you going to read Roseblood? Isn’t WIFSY such a fun meme? Did you do a WIFSY of your own? Let me know down in the comments! I always love hearing from you guys. Hope you’re all doing well! Toodles! 🙂
LOL well that’s a fun meme! I never read blurbs and only pick books by cover (or author). It’s amazing the surprises that can pop up. Heh

Oh, that’s so interesting! I always read the blurbs, although I’m trying to work away from that, because sometimes they give way too much away. 🙂

This is such a cool idea! Your blurb was great, even if it was completely irrelevant haha 😛

I AM SO PROUD OF MYSELF I CALLED THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA REFERENCE. Noticed that sneaky mask on the beautiful cover. But eek this seems like a really fun meme! I thought your synopsis was the actual synopsis before I checked back over the post haha. 😛
