Top Ten Books Which Feature Characters Who Are Misfits

Hopefully you know what I mean by that. Anyway, my first pick is a sweet young children’s series. NERDS! (No, I’m not making fun of you) by Michael Buckley.  All the main characters are or were misfits, nerds, weirdos, whatever you like to call it. Basically, the them was that it’s okay to be yourself and to grow up, and you shouldn’t care so much what other people think about you.

The next one is about a misfit, but not because of what you think. Okay, that didn’t make any sense. Anyway, the book is Out of My Mind by Sharon Draper.

Melody (the main character) is disabled, so there’s a LOT of things she can’t do, such as eating or drinking by herself, talking, walking, you name it, she most likely can’t do it. BUT just because your body is disabled doesn’t mean your brain is. Most people assume she’s not very smart, but Melody has a lot going on in that head of hers. All her life (has been a series of doors in her face… Hehe. Just kidding.) But imagine being

I love that picture. Anyway, I love the creativeness of this metaphor, of Melody being the goldfish. Because that is exactly what it’s like for her! At the end of the story (no spoilers, don’t worry!) Melody finally finds out how to be herself. I like this picture even better than the cover:

Melody is truly not just jumping out of an open hole she had missed before; she is breaking down a barrier to go somewhere she never thought possible.

A Crooked Kind of Perfect by Linda Urban. Zoe is odd, and a boy that follows her home is even odder. (Is that a word?) Her dream is to play the piano, but when her dad brings home a wheezy organ, her perfect dream come true becomes fuzzy at the edges.

Frostfire by Amanda Hocking.  I read this book before the Trylle series (oops!) because I didn’t know there was a Trylle series! I better switch the gear to reverse and head back to the first book! Anyway, that doesn’t change my opinion about this book. It was fantastic. Period.

Bryn Aven is an outcast among the Kanin, what with her mother being from a different tribe, and all. Her difference isn’t easily overlooked, either. She missed out on her father’s traditional looks, so instead of brown skin and eyes, she has blond hair that can’t go unnoticed in a crowd of Kanins. I saw the cover and thought, oh, this is going to be a fun, sweet read. Well, I was right, but not how I thought it would be! Don’t be deterred by the pretty face. Bryn has a goofy boss (dare I say more?) and she won’t hesitate to kill you on orders.

Counting By 7s by Holly Goldberg Sloan. Ohhhhhh I love this book so much.

Willow Chance is a twelve-year-old genius, with two loving adoptive parents. But her whole world is turned on its head when her parents die in a car crash. When her new best friend, a counselor that never grew up, and a poor family work together, can Willow start living again?

Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli- This book touched me more than you can imagine. Stargirl was beyond unique, she was- oh, I can’t find the words for her. Fascinating. Pure. Hopeful. If you haven’t, well, you must read this book!

The Clique by Lisi Harrison- I believe Nikki and I have mentioned this series before. I’ve only read a couple, but she is, what, 14 books in? Claire definitely felt out of place in the first book. Massie made sure to give her the opposite of a warm welcome. These books were so not what I expected. In a good way. 🙂

The Angel Tree by Daphne Benedis-Grab. Yes, a sweet children’s book. Especially Joe felt unwelcome, like he didn’t deserve to have a wish for the tree. Max, too. This was such a heart-warming book. My only regret is that I don’t live there! It really was a wonderful story.

Wonder by R.J. Palacio: Hasn’t everyone read this book? If not, well, you’re missing out! (Everyone’s read it because it’s worth reading! Did that make any sense? I’m sleep deprived… :-P) August is such a likable character, but he goes through such hardship. Thankfully, he makes some great friends that can look past his physical appearance to his wonderful personality.

Cinder by Marissa Meyer: Need I say more? Cinder is a cyborg. The lady who owns the store nearby won’t even sell to her, for crying out loud!

Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell: Yes, I know this is eleven books! 🙂 Im currently reading this one, so no spoilers! (For me or for you… Hehe.) But Eleanor and Park, much as I love them, are definitely out of the ordinary.
